Bourse de Paris, Paris
Stock Exchange
The
Bourse de Paris, also called the Paris
Bourse, was renamed last 2000 to Euronext
Paris. The building is the famous Paris
stock exchange. Stock trading activities in
Paris have been housed in various locations
in the city. One of the more popular venues
is the Bourse de Paris, but other more
informal spots include the rue Quincampoix,
the rue Vivienne, and the back of the Paris
opera house.
Finally, during the early 19th century, the
stock trading activities were housed in the
Palaise de la Bourse, also known as the
Palais Brongiart in honor of architect
Alexandre-Theodore Brogniart. Under the
direction of the stockbrokers’ council, the
Compagnie des agents de change operated the
stock markets in Paris from the second half
of the 19th century.
Around
60 agents de change, who were the Paris
Bourse’s official stockbrokers, participated
in the formation and establishment of prices
and exchange. All agents de change has to be
French citizens. They were nominated by
former agents and approved by the Minister
of Finance before being
appointed by the President
of the Republic through the passing of a
decree.
As the years passed, the trading processes
changed and during the late 1990s, the
Euronext initiative was launched. This
involved the alliance of the European stock
exchanges.
